AAA-Fund Endorses Garrett Yee for California Assembly
College Leader Brings Vision and Experience to Guide California
Washington, DC — The Asian American Action Fund (AAA-Fund) has endorsed community leader and Ohlonee College Trustee Garrett Yee for the 20th District of the California State Assembly.
“Garrett has proven himself time and time again as a great leader who can get things done,” said Gautam Dutta, AAA-Fund Executive Director. “He cares deeply about his community and the state and the AAA-Fund is proud to endorse him.”
“I am deeply honored to receive the endorsement of the Asian American Action Fund as it validates my personal commitment to public service for over 22 years, as well as my commitment to Asian Americans, who are a vital part of our larger community,” said Yee.
Yee currently manages the Rating and Statistical Department of the Workers’ Compensation Insurance Rating Bureau (WCIRB). In this position, he oversees a professional and technical staff, while teaching educational seminars to industry professionals. In 2002, Yee was elected to the Ohlone College Board of Trustees, and in 2006, he was re-elected to a second term. As Board Chair, he supported the responsible construction of LEED certified buildings on the Newark and Fremont campuses.
Yee is deeply committed to serving his community. He has served as President of Citizens for Better Community, District Chairman for the Boy Scouts of America, Chair of the Fremont Library Advisory Commission, and President of the South Bay Chinese Club of Southern Alameda County. He has also been recognized locally and nationally for his service.
As a Colonel in the United States Army Reserve, Yee is one of the few individuals across the country that holds a locally elected office and has served with the military in Iraq. In 2006, he was deployed to Iraq in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom, where he used his background in infrastructure and small businesses to focus on reconstruction. His efforts led to the publication of a handbook now used by the Department of State.
Yee is running for California State Assembly in the 20th District, which includes Fremont, Union City, and Hayward. The seat became available after Assemblyman Alberto Torrico termed out and decided to run for attorney general.
Yee has pledged to support California’s higher education system with a special emphasis on community colleges. One of his priorities is ensuring that community colleges offer more vocational courses with direct links to industry, in order to better prepare workers. He is a supporter of health reform, and as a member of the insurance industry has the necessary knowledge to guide the state as it works to expand its health care system.
“Garrett has an in-depth knowledge of the issues that are important to our community and to the State of California – education and health care.” said Marybelle C. Ang, AAA-Fund Board Member. “We need his common sense leadership and expertise to guide our State.”
Yee is running against Fremont Vice Mayor Bob Wieckowski in the Democratic Primary on June 8th. U.S. Congressman John Garamendi, retired State Controller Steve Westly, and former State Assemblyman of the 20th District John Dutra, Sr, have endorsed Yee.
Yee is a long-time local resident of the 20th Assembly District area. He has lived in Fremont for over 40 years, Newark for two years, and Union City for almost a year. He holds a bachelor’s degree from Santa Clara University, an MBA from Golden Gate University, and a second Masters in Strategic Studies.
The AAA-Fund is a Democratic political action committee whose goal is to increase the voice of Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders (AAPIs) on every level of local, state and federal government in America. To achieve this goal, we address the chronic under-representation of AAPIs as campaign volunteers, campaign contributors, and candidates for political office. The AAA-Fund has endorsed candidates across the country. For more information: http://www.aaa-fund.org/.
