Oakland Deputy City Attorney Elected President of South Asian Bar Association of Northern California
OAKLAND – Deputy City Attorney Kiran Jain, a lawyer in the Land Use & Development Unit of the Oakland City Attorney’s Office, has been elected president of the South Asian Bar Association of Northern California (SABA-NC).
Jain has worked for the Oakland City Attorney’s Office since December 2007, and has served on SABA-NC’s 15-member board of directors since June of last year. She was recently elected by fellow board members to serve a one-year term as the organization’s president.
Jain, a graduate of Georgetown University law school, will help set policy and act as the representative of the 500-member Northern California organization – the first U.S. chapter of the National South Asian Bar Association.
“Today’s economic reality has increased the legal issues faced by many in the South Asian community,” Jain said in a prepared statement. “Mortgage defaults, unemployment, immigration, and many other concerns have multiplied the need for legal representation in our community, but many have little or no knowledge of how to access pro bono services or a reasonably priced attorney.”
“I intend to lead SABA-NC by focusing on our core values: empowering our disenfranchised and minority communities and increasing access to legal services for those who have been most affected by this economic downturn.”
Oakland City Attorney John Russo congratulated Jain on her new role. “I fully support Kiran’s efforts on behalf of the South Asian Bar Association. I have no doubt that she will continue to be a great asset to SABA-NC and its mission of advocacy for the South Asian community and diversity in the legal profession.”
