AAA-Fund Endorses Susan Shin-Angulo

September 16, 2009, Washington DC – Asian American Action Fund has endorsed Susan Shin-Angulo for Cherry Hill Township Council in New Jersey.

“Susan will work with a singular focus to listen and respond to the community she cares so deeply about,” said Gautam Dutta, AAA-Fund Executive Director. “She will make a great councilwoman.”

In recent years Shin-Angulo has dedicated herself to the local community. She currently serves on the local zoning board and human relations council, as well as on the board of an area food bank. She is focusing her campaign on reducing spending, expanding recreational services, and keeping the community’s children safe.

Shin-Angulo has been endorsed by the Cherry Hill Democratic Committee for the upcoming election, which will be held on November 3. Shin-Angulo has lived in Cherry Hill for more than ten years and is married with two daughters.

Prior to taking on full-time public service, Shin-Angulo acquired extensive experience in the biotech and pharmaceutical industries.

Cherry Hill Township is located in Camden County in southern New Jersey and is near Philadelphia. It has approximately 80,000 residents, about 10 percent of whom are Asian American.

With her election, Shin-Angulo would become the first Asian American to serve on the council. She would also be the first Korean American woman elected to public office in the state.

AAA-Fund is a Democratic political action committee whose goal is to increase the voice of Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders (AAPIs) on every level of local, state and federal government in America. To achieve this goal, we address the chronic under-representation of AAPIs as campaign volunteers, campaign contributors, and candidates for political office. The AAA-Fund has endorsed candidates across the country.

Congratulations Susan! As your friend and fellow running mate for Council, I am priveledged to know a person of such integrity and compassion. I look forward to serving on town council together for many years to come.

Thank you AAA Fund for your support. This is truly a great honor. I hope to hear from many of you with some ideas and suggestions about being in office.
Thank you again.
Susan

Go, Susan !!! Go, Cherry Hill !!!

From a fellow New Jerseyan born bred studied and worked here, I say congrats!

Susan,

I am so proud of you. New Jersey needs you! The Garden State is the most diverse in the nation, yet, of its 566 municipalities and thousands of elected positions, less than 20 are filled by Asians. Moreover, of the 440 appointed superior court judges, only one is Asian. These stats are troubling in light of the 740,000 Asians who call NJ home (5th highest in the nation)… representing over 7% of the total NJ population.

Congrats!

- Michael

Thank you for the warm wishes!
If any one is around in Cherry Hill tonight please come by the Camden County Dem HQ to help stuff over 3000 envelops. We need as many hands as possible.
If you have any questions please contact Melissa Buckwheat at 856-424-5757.

Thank you!

FYI, below is the content of a letter from the pan-Asian community in support of Susan’s campaign. This was mailed to over 800 Asian families in Cherry Hill. Broad community support is critical for any Asian candidate for office…

AN OPEN LETTER TO THE
CHERRY HILL ASIAN-AMERICAN COMMUNITY

The Cherry Hill Asian-American community is thriving. Of the Township’s 85,000 residents, approximately 10% are of Asian ancestry. The Township’s robust Asian commercial sector includes two large Asian supermarkets, numerous restaurants, and a growing number of Asian owned businesses. Asians from Korea, the Philippines, China, India, Taiwan, Pakistan, Vietnam, Japan, and Thailand, among others, call Cherry Hill their home. Without question, Cherry Hill’s rich diversity is one of its greatest assets.

To strengthen our foundation in Cherry Hill, it is critical to become engaged in the political process. A very realistic objective is to increase Asian-American representation in the public sector. Notably, across New Jersey, of its 566 municipalities and thousands of elected positions, no more than a small handful is held by Asian-Americans. As the most diverse state in the nation, and one of the most diverse towns in New Jersey, we can, and must, do better. Meaningful political representation ensures that our community’s interests are promoted, giving us a “voice” and presence critical for enhanced viability. Doing nothing now will only pass this burden onto our children.

As a Cherry Hill resident, this November 3rd, you will have the opportunity to participate in a historic election. One of the Democratic candidates for Township Council, Susan Shin-Angulo, is Asian-American. We are proud to endorse Susan, along with her running mates, David Fleisher, Jacquelene Silver, and Jim Bannar. With your support, Susan seeks to become the first Asian-American elected in Cherry Hill, the first Asian woman elected in South Jersey, and the first Korean-American woman elected in the State of New Jersey. This is an unprecedented chance to effect change.

For those of you not familiar with Susan, she is, like many of us, a first generation American. Along with her husband and two daughters, Susan resides in the Charleston-Riding section of the Township, and has been extremely active in the community, serving on the Cherry Hill Zoning Board, the Cherry Hill Human Relations Commission, the Camden County Democrat Committee, and the Cherry Hill Democrat Organization. She also sits on the Board of the Food Bank of South Jersey. Susan has been a visible presence and proactive voice for the Asian community on a wide range of matters. She has also been endorsed by the national Asian American Action Fund (see http://www.AAA-Fund.com). You can learn more about Susan and her campaign by visiting http://www.cherryhilldemocrats.com/angulo.asp.

Susan’s academic and professional background is impressive. She has a Post Baccalaureate degree in Cytogenetics from Thomas Jefferson University, and has worked in pharmaceutical sales/marketing, as well as genetic research at the University of Pennsylvania. Her experience also includes commercial real estate management where she participated in substantial redevelopment projects and public-private partnerships.

This November 3rd, we urge you to vote for Susan Shin-Angulo, and her Democratic running mates, to ensure our community’s continued progress and success. If you are not yet registered to vote, please do so by October 13, by visiting http://www.nj.gov/state/elections/voter-registration-application.html. You are also welcome to post lawn signs and volunteer on election day by calling 856-662-7555 or visiting http://www.cherryhilldemocrats.com.
