Earlier this week I mused over the alleged tremendous advantage Clinton holds over Obama in the Asian American community and how that wouldn’t help in West Virginia because there are about seven Asian Americans there. OK, that’s not fair, there are about 14,000, according to data from the Census Bureau. Anyway, I wondered if there was some sort of representational sample of Democratic Asian American politicians and politicos I could use to find the breakdown. Then I realized AAA-Fund could serve that purpose. Now I’m not saying AAA-Fund IS representative of the Democratic Asian American community — that claim is above my pay grade — I’m simply saying it could function as such for the purposes of this discussion.
Starting with the honorary board, which covers the politicians, I found:
| Name | State | Superdelegate? | Why? | Endorsing |
| Neil Abercrombie | HI | Yes | HI-01 | Obama |
| Daniel Akaka | HI | Yes | HI-S | Obama |
| Kumar Barve | MD | No | Obama | |
| Xavier Becerra | CA | Yes | CA-31 | Obama |
| Madeleine Bordallo | GU | Yes | GU-AL | Obama |
| Satveer Chaudhary | MN | No | Obama | |
| John Chiang | CA | No | Clinton | |
| Judy Chu | CA | No | Clinton | |
| Swait Dandekar | IA | No | Clinton | |
| Eni Faleomavaega | AS | Yes | AS-AL | Obama |
| Warren Furutani | CA | No | Clinton | |
| Jay Goyal | OH | No | Undecided | |
| Al Green | TX | Yes | TX-09 | Obama |
| Mazie Hirono | HI | Yes | HI-02 | Obama |
| Mike Honda | CA | Yes | CA-15 | Undecided |
| Daniel Inouye | HI | Yes | HI-S | Clinton |
| Susan Lee | MD | No | Clinton | |
| Ted Lieu | CA | No | Obama | |
| Gary Locke | WA | No | Clinton | |
| Doris Matsui | CA | Yes | CA-05 | Clinton |
| Norm Mineta | CA | No | Obama | |
| Mee Moua | MN | Yes | MN-DNC | Obama |
| Bobby Scott | VA | Yes | VA-03 | Obama |
| Robert Underwood | GU | No | Undecided | |
| Kris Valderrama | MD | No | Unknown | |
| Hubert Vo | TX | No | Clinton | |
| David Wu | OR | Yes | OR-01 | Obama |
Or, if you just want the numbers:
| Politicians | Clinton | Obama | Undecided | Unknown |
| Superdelegates | 2 | 10 | 1 | |
| Others | 7 | 4 | 2 | 1 |
| Total | 9 | 14 | 3 | 1 |
What does this all mean? Obama seems far better at securing the support of Asian American superdelegates. Even if (ah, what a game Clinton likes to play with delegate counts) we discount Abercrombie and Green for not being Asian and gave Clinton the outstanding superdelegates (including Bel, who is a DNC member), Obama is still ahead. You may say AAA-Fund’s honorary board lacks various prominent Asian American politicians such as Gordon Quan (one more non-super for Clinton, for those keeping track). Clinton has clearly done better in reaching out to the non-superdelgates – good job Irene!
Some of AAA-Fund’s Executive Board, which I’m using to represent Asian American politicos, also are supportive of one or the other campaign. I speak of public endorsements, physical involvement, or donations already drawing attention from others. If you’re curious about other $upport, feel free to use The Center for Responsive Politics’ Pres 08 donor lookup, but keep in mind that it does not reveal small donors and donors can change their minds or regret their donations.
Irene Bueno and Junelle Cavero have both worked extremely hard for Clinton with Bueno securing the support of many of the politicians listed above (and numerous others) and Cavero mobilizing the voters. Howard Moon’s donation, which you may discover through the lookup tool linked above, caught the attention of American Thinker, a daily conservative webzine. In the absence of other evidence for support, the donation may simply be “business as usual.”
Regular readers of the web log are well aware of Paul Igasaki’s support for Obama. You may be unaware, however, that Mark Keam has also publicly endorsed Obama.
And then there’s Bel Leong-Hong, an undecided superdelegate.
We may still be divided, but unlike an unsettlingly large chunk of the primary electorate Tuesday night in Wild, Wonderful West Virginia, I don’t see a single name mentioned above that won’t completely go to bat to prevent Bush’s 3rd term.
Clinton said “It’s Almost Heaven,” and that’s true because Clinton’s campaign is almost dead – time to start running against McCain.

Update: Madeleine Bordallo has endorsed Barack Obama and the above tables now reflect that.
