BACKGROUND AND MISSION:

Founded in September 2002, Families for Freedom (FFF) is a New York- based multi-ethnic defense network by and for immigrants facing and fighting deportation. We are immigrant prisoners (detainees), former immigrant prisoners, their loved ones, or individuals at risk of deportation. We come from dozens of countries, across continents. FFF seeks to repeal the laws that are tearing apart our homes and neighborhoods; and to build the power of immigrant communities as communities of color, to provide a guiding voice in the growing movement for immigrant rights as human rights. FFF has evolved into an organizing center against deportation. We are source of support, education, and campaigns for directly affected families and communities – locally and nationally.

POSITION SUMMARY:

The Executive Director must have the vision and leadership skills to develop and strengthen relationships with a diverse set of stakeholders and to create short and long-term strategies for effective programs and growth. The ideal candidate will be passionate about advancing FFF’s mission, use consensus-building in executing plans and be capable of managing staff and mobilizing and organizing a membership of directly-affected immigrant community members. The Executive Director is critical to the growth and success of the organization and builds a structure for using resources as effectively as possible to achieve the organization’s mission while cultivating relationships with existing and prospective funders. This position requires leadership skills that include: taking initiative to guide and direct projects and get the work done; coaching and training staff and members to foster leadership and responsibility; being accountable for establishing a vision and direction for the organization while also prioritizing concrete goals and outcomes. Key responsibilities include fundraising and development, program, operations, and fiscal management. Working in partnership with the Board, staff, and members, the Executive Director will help to guide the organization to the next level of organizational growth. This position reports to the Board of Directors.

RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE:

  • Work closely with the Board, members and allies to develop a strategic plan, which includes setting short and long-term advocacy, communication and fundraising goals for the organization.
  • In collaboration with staff and members, facilitate the development of campaign and program objectives.
  • Drive and diversify fundraising for the organization.
  • Prepare and oversee annual budget.
  • Represent the organization at conferences, meetings, legislative events and other gatherings.
  • Develop and maintain strategic partnerships with public and private agencies, governmental and community leaders and media.
  • Foster a community-oriented, supportive, and accountable work environment.
  • Manage day-to-day operations of office including supervision of two staff members.

CANDIDATE QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Direct experience in the sector or in a related field of immigrant rights, criminal justice or community organizing.
  • Strong background in organizing or working directly with organizers.
  • Experience or demonstrated interest working with membership-led community organizations.
  • Knowledge of non-profit fiscal management, including fundraising, accounting and budgeting.
  • Familiarity with city, state, and federal advocacy, policy work and campaigns.
  • Superior and demonstrated ability in public speaking, written and oral communication and interpersonal relations.
  • High-level proficiency in computer programs such as Microsoft Word, Power Point, Excel and Quickbooks.
  • Bachelors’ degree in a related field preferred.

This is an entry-level position within Perry, Krumsiek & Jack, LLP, a 30-attorney
corporate law firm with offices in Washington, DC and Boston. We are seeking
candidates interested in getting training and experience in working at a law firm.
This is a great opportunity for a recent undergraduate who is considering
attending law school in a year or two and would like to learn more about possible
career paths for practicing attorneys. There will be opportunities to learn about
multiple areas of law, including litigation and trial preparation, mergers &
acquisitions and other corporate transactions, and regulatory compliance
matters.

POSITION OVERVIEW
The Deputy Director position, based in Washington, D.C., works closely with AAJC’s Executive Director as a senior-level staff person leading important initiatives and working with other senior-level management on day-to-day management (with an emphasis on program guidance and institutional capacity building), fundraising and relationship building.

The Deputy Director will help translate and implement the vision from AAJC’s strategic plan and work with his/her counterparts at the Asian American Center for Advancing Justice’s other members and AAJC staff and board to turn the co-branding initiative into action plans to achieve goals. Overall responsibilities include:

  • Facilitate linkages and alliance building between regional affiliates and local Asian American communities and the D.C. policy work and national agenda and vice versa (providing the opportunity for frequent travel outside of D.C. to different regions).
  • Implement the co-branding initiative.
  • Steward the development and functioning of the management team comprising the Directors of Operations, Communications, Development and Programs. Supervise the Program Director.

KEY ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Implement the co-branding vision and goals by working with affiliates and AAJC staff and board and providing staffing for the development of the co-brand.

  • Design, plan and manage how the co-brand is implemented. Keep progress on track.
  • Build strong relationships and communication among the affiliates of the co-brand and between the affiliates and AAJC staff and board.
  • Coordinate the co-branding work with that of AAJC staff on programs, communications and development.

Fundraising and public relations

  • Manage and develop relationships with key external stakeholders and partners ranging from civil rights groups, Capital Hill players, law firms, key funders and donors.
  • Attend meetings around the country to represent AAJC, as appropriate.

Staff and leadership development and programmatic management oversight

  • Assist in leading the Management Team.
  • Manage internal decision-making processes to ensure programmatic and cobranding activities interface effectively with other internal departments and affiliates.
  • Act as a day-to-day thought partner and support to the Executive Director.
  • Together with Management Team colleagues, ensure AAJC uses effective staff management practices Provide leadership as acting Executive Director in the absence of Executive Director.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • A thorough understanding of and commitment to the mission and goals of AAJC.
  • Knowledge of and experience working with the Asian American community.
  • Knowledge of civil and human rights issues.
  • Law degree, with admission to at least one state bar.
  • Seven years experience in positions of progressively increasing management responsibility in the nonprofit and/or public sector, including personnel, project and program management.
  • Ability to operationalize vision, think strategically, creatively problem solve, exercise good judgment and lead change.
  • Successful track record forging alliances and coalitions and moving people to take collective action.
  • Facilitative and collaborative leadership style with strong people skills.
  • Experience working with diverse groups from various sectors ranging from grassroots to policy institutions.
  • Fundraising experience, including building and developing relationships and oversight of program development.
  • Excellent communicator and writer with experience as a spokesperson who can articulate messages to different audiences.
  • Strong supervisory skills and experience with proven ability to manage, coach and mentor staff and work collegially with management team members

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Knowledge of litigation.
  • Knowledge and experience of legislative processes and policy advocacy.
  • Movement building experience.

APALA Seeking 2010 Tam Tran Program & Outreach Fellow

The Asian Pacific American Labor Alliance, AFL-CIO is seeking a
passionate social justice activist for its new fellowship in
remembrance of Tam Tran, an undocumented student activist
and filmmaker. APALA is excited to be able to sponsor a fellow
who believes in equality, opportunity, and social justice – all
values that Tam epitomized. Tam was born in Germany after
her parents were forced to flee Vietnam, and came to the U.S.
at the age of 6. In her short time, she testified before Congress
on the DREAM Act and inspired other students to speak out for
their rights. She attended Santa Ana College, and transferred to
UCLA where she worked with a network of “underground
undergrads” to release a report on undocumented students at
UCLA. Tam was pursuing a PhD at Brown University and
produced two films: “Lost and Found” and “Seattle Underground
Railroad.”

This is a paid, full-time fellowship, and an excellent opportunity
for leadership development. You will be working with some of
the most respected leaders in the labor movement to promote
immigrant, worker, and civil rights. Founded in 1992, APALA is
the nation’s first and only APA union. The Fellow will work on
projects including but not limited to: outreach to youth and
student groups, organizing the APALA 2011 national convention,
a congressional briefing on Asian Pacific American worker issues,
and conducting a membership drive. The Fellow will also handle
some administrative duties and provide operations support,
working under the supervision of the Associate Director.

The ideal candidate will have previous political or issue campaign
experience and enjoy working with a small but nimble team. The
fellowship runs a minimum of nine months, with the potential to
extend, and comes with a modest stipend. The position is based
in Washington, DC.

* familiarity with Asian Pacific American and labor issues
