Terribly controversial & tricky but given a cursory thought, it opens the door to the basic larger question of who gets to vote at all. Luckily, city elections are more liable to respond to the needs of its citizens who may not all meet the customary citizenry credentials so this change will more accurately reflect the electorate.

There's so much coverage from the somewhat neutral to the pukingly flattering but I would warn all that Mike's advancing the community goes beyond just running for office but in truly grooming others for leadership which I don't see in Khanna. The AAA-Fund's mission is to promote progressive AAPIs from political participation and, to that end, I do not see Khanna's entry as promoting others from entering as much as breeding the same money machine and inside-the-industry mentality that stunts actual widespread participation not to mention diluting resources from a long-trusted leader for AAPI political participation. I post as a personal note separate from my formal duties as Executive Editor.

I’ve a great variety of opinions over the years on this issue and the arguments are adamant on all sides, within the diverse AAPI world & the nation as a whole, so like immigration, the intractability of this issue makes it tortured. Indeed, we must discuss is to gain an ever improving agreement, even if it changes over time.

It’s been a long time since I’ve had to apply for college and I still got in somewhere, so I’ve had to re-educate myself a bit on this issue. Years ago I had the preconceived notion that affirmative action policies generally hurt AA/API applicants, so I wondered if that was still true to this day.

I’m torn on the issue. I can put my AA/API hat on and see how those policies aren’t helpful to the community at large and those who have worked hard to earn their way into a top flight academic institution. But as an American, and holding to my own (liberal) beliefs, I think we have a vested interest to make sure that access to quality education can penetrate to the socioeconomic levels of society that need it most.

As KJ points out, it seems that AA/API advocacy groups are torn on the issue. And I think that’s perfectly fine and healthy for the community to wrestle with.

I am making comment because my heart aches due to the hatred in this world, the anger that people have toward others for no good reason.
This last brutal crime has sicken me, the murder of Dr Melissa Ketunuti.
She had so much to give to this world, she gave her whole young life to save children from dying & becoming sick.
Her killer is not only a murderer he is a thief. His anger was more important to him then her life.
Shame on you Jason Smith, I hope you go to jail for the rest of your miserable life. Try to do that to the guys in jail, see what happens to you.

I an not an Asian, I am a caucasian female 74 y/o. Who has lived long enough to see that we in America are in trouble & we need to do something. I wish I knew what to do.

Please give suggestions on how I can support for improvement, change or whatever. Diane
