AAA-Fund Endorses Garrett Yee for California Assembly

College Leader Brings Vision and Experience to Guide California

Washington, DC — The Asian American Action Fund (AAA-Fund) has endorsed community leader and Ohlonee College Trustee Garrett Yee for the 20th District of the California State Assembly.

“Garrett has proven himself time and time again as a great leader who can get things done,” said Gautam Dutta, AAA-Fund Executive Director. “He cares deeply about his community and the state and the AAA-Fund is proud to endorse him.”

“I am deeply honored to receive the endorsement of the Asian American Action Fund as it validates my personal commitment to public service for over 22 years, as well as my commitment to Asian Americans, who are a vital part of our larger community,” said Yee.

Yee currently manages the Rating and Statistical Department of the Workers’ Compensation Insurance Rating Bureau (WCIRB). In this position, he oversees a professional and technical staff, while teaching educational seminars to industry professionals. In 2002, Yee was elected to the Ohlone College Board of Trustees, and in 2006, he was re-elected to a second term. As Board Chair, he supported the responsible construction of LEED certified buildings on the Newark and Fremont campuses.

Yee is deeply committed to serving his community. He has served as President of Citizens for Better Community, District Chairman for the Boy Scouts of America, Chair of the Fremont Library Advisory Commission, and President of the South Bay Chinese Club of Southern Alameda County. He has also been recognized locally and nationally for his service.

As a Colonel in the United States Army Reserve, Yee is one of the few individuals across the country that holds a locally elected office and has served with the military in Iraq. In 2006, he was deployed to Iraq in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom, where he used his background in infrastructure and small businesses to focus on reconstruction. His efforts led to the publication of a handbook now used by the Department of State.

Yee is running for California State Assembly in the 20th District, which includes Fremont, Union City, and Hayward. The seat became available after Assemblyman Alberto Torrico termed out and decided to run for attorney general.

Yee has pledged to support California’s higher education system with a special emphasis on community colleges. One of his priorities is ensuring that community colleges offer more vocational courses with direct links to industry, in order to better prepare workers. He is a supporter of health reform, and as a member of the insurance industry has the necessary knowledge to guide the state as it works to expand its health care system.

“Garrett has an in-depth knowledge of the issues that are important to our community and to the State of California – education and health care.” said Marybelle C. Ang, AAA-Fund Board Member. “We need his common sense leadership and expertise to guide our State.”

Yee is running against Fremont Vice Mayor Bob Wieckowski in the Democratic Primary on June 8th. U.S. Congressman John Garamendi, retired State Controller Steve Westly, and former State Assemblyman of the 20th District John Dutra, Sr, have endorsed Yee.

Yee is a long-time local resident of the 20th Assembly District area. He has lived in Fremont for over 40 years, Newark for two years, and Union City for almost a year. He holds a bachelor’s degree from Santa Clara University, an MBA from Golden Gate University, and a second Masters in Strategic Studies.

Asian American Action Fund Endorses Physician Ami Bera for U.S. Congress in California’s Third District

Washington, D.C. / June 2, 2010 — The Asian American Action Fund has endorsed Ami Bera, Democratic candidate for the United States House of Representatives from California’s Third Congressional District.

“Dr. Bera is the perfect candidate for an election cycle in which Americans are looking for outsiders to shake up Washington,” said Gautam Dutta, board member of the AAA-Fund. “He will bring a reformist voice to the nation’s capital.”

Bera is a first-generation American who was born and raised in California. His parents immigrated to the United States from India in the 1950s. Bera has spent his professional career as a physician and educator. He has served in those capacities as Associate Dean for Admissions at the UC Davis School of Medicine and as the Chief Medical Officer for the County of Sacramento.

“Dr. Bera’s background uniquely positions him to be an important voice on debates over education and health care policy, including implementation of the landmark health reform bill,” noted Dutta.

California’s Third Congressional District is located just outside the city of Sacramento and includes much of the broader Sacramento County Asian Pacific Americans comprise more than 10 percent of the district’s population. Bera has mounted a well-funded challenge to incumbent Republican Dan Lungren, who has held the Third District Congressional seat since 2005. As of late April, Bera was the only challenger in any California congressional race to have raised more than his incumbent opponent. In the first quarter, Bera’s campaign had more donors than his opponent, though the average donation to Bera’s campaign was less than the average donation to Lundgren’s.

“As the overall fundraising figures and the number of his small donors shows, Dr. Bera is riding a wave of grassroots enthusiasm for his candidacy,” added Dutta.

Bera’s candidacy is one of the 13 Congressional campaigns to be selected to the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee’s “Red to Blue” program, which features the party’s top prospects for winning Congressional seats held by Republicans.

AAA-Fund Candidate Stuns DC Pundits with Strong Finish
Colleen Hanabusa Favored to Win Congressional Seat in November

MAY 22, 2010, HONOLULU — Stunning the national political establishment, Colleen Hanabusa emerged as the top Hawai’i Democrat in a divisive special election for Congress.  The AAA-Fund candidate’s dramatic finish makes her the odds-on favorite to win this Congressional seat in November.

“Some told us that we shouldn’t be in this race. They told us to sit on the sidelines. They thought that we were going to fail. But momentum has been on our side, and continues to build to our advantage,” said Colleen Hanabusa.

“Tonight, Colleen Hanabusa stood and delivered.  Like Joe Sestak, she listened to the voters, and not to voices outside the state,” said Gautam Dutta, AAA Fund Executive Director. “We’ll continue to do our utmost to help her win this Democratic district in the September primary and November general election,” Dutta added.

Although Democrats won nearly 60 percent of the vote, Republican Charles Djou won the May 22 special election – because Democrat Ed Case siphoned off thousands of votes from Hanabusa.  In the final tally, Democrats Hanabusa and Case garnered, respectively, 31 percent and 28 percent of the vote; while Republican Djou received 39 percent of the vote.

The 1st Congressional District’s Democratic majority became divided due to Hawai’i's unusual method of filling midterm vacancies.  Instead of facing off in a separate party primary, all candidates ran against one other in a winner-take-all election.

A number of polls in this fiercely contested election had shown Hanabusa trailing Djou and Case. In fact, the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee (DCCC) almost endorsed Case, because they did not believe that Hanabusa could win the Democratic vote.  However, after learning important facts on the ground from AAA-Fund and other top Asian American leaders, the DCCC decided to stay neutral.

“There’s no time for a blame game. Now is the opportunity for all of us on the national front to close ranks behind Colleen Hanabusa. The September primary election awaits, and we Democrats must unite behind the candidate chosen by the voters,” said Bel Leong-Hong, AAA-Fund Chair-Elect.

Colleen Hanabusa was elected President of the Hawaii State Senate in 2006, becoming the first woman to lead either chamber in the state’s legislature, and the first Asian American woman in the country to lead a state legislature.

Hanabusa is a fourth-generation Japanese-American. Her great-grandparents came to Hawaii in the 1880s to work on a sugar plantation. Hanabusa earned her B.A., M.A., and J.D. from the University of Hawaii, and was a successful labor lawyer for more than 30 years.

This special election was triggered by the unexpected resignation of former Congressmember Neil Abercrombie, who stepped down to run for Hawai’i Governor.  The party primary for this seat will be held on September 18, 2010; the general election, November 2, 2010.

The AAA-Fund is a national Democratic political organization whose goal is to increase the voice of Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders (AAPIs) in local, state and federal government, by encouraging AAPIs to volunteer on campaigns, raise money for candidates, and run for political office.

An Alliance Like No Other and the Courage to Change

Please help our 2009 Sam Yoon Fellow take Team Flaherty-Yoon to the Mayoral finish line!  Please read about Sam’s exciting alliance with Michael Flaherty as they take on an entrenched Boston Mayor.

To quote from Senator Ted Kennedy, the work begins anew. This is exactly how I feel about the alliance of Michael Flaherty and Sam Yoon. As Caroline has pointed out in an earlier AAA Fund blog post, Sam has joined forces with second-place finisher Michael Flaherty to unseat incumbent Boston mayor Thomas M. Menino.

This is exactly what Sam was talking about during his campaign by working collaboratively with people even if it is a person who was a fellow rival during the preliminary mayoral election. It is this type of innovative thinking that Boston desperately needs in a time when the country is moving ahead into the 21st century. Both Michael and Sam agree that Boston is stuck and that it take new ideas and new leadership to make sure Boston is also moving ahead into the 21st century.

As Sam mentioned during his speech on September 22nd, change is hard, but as Michael said on the same day, it also takes courage to change. That is what you need to think about when you are considering whether to continue to support my fellowship working for Sam. Changing course is hard but it also takes the courage to realize that the work DOES begin anew and that we cannot stop until that work takes Michael and Sam together to Boston City Hall on November 3rd. I do wish that you can extend your support for me to continue my fellowship. Thank you so much.

My Experience as a Fellow on the Yoon Campaign…

Please help our 2009 Sam Yoon Fellow take Team Flaherty-Yoon to the Mayoral finish line!  Please read about Sam’s exciting alliance with Michael Flaherty as they take on an entrenched Boston Mayor.

As I look back on my fellowship so far working for Sam Yoon, I am forever grateful that he and the AAA Fund gave me an once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to work for him. I will never forget the first time I drove Sam and his wife Tina around Boston. It was an experience that I will never forget listening to what he had on his mind about change and collaboration to help Boston move into the 21st Century. That was no doubt my number-one best experience I ever had. (Yeah, you read that right, BEST EXPERIENCE.)

Working for Sam opened doors and experiences for me that I could not even imagine. Also, meeting great, talented, and energetic people was an awesome experience as well. It has sharpened my political view and analysis of what is wrong with the city of Boston as well as greater problems in our urban neighborhoods. It has made me a more confident speaker to people on the streets as well as a debater
and thinker of the problems that we do face in communities of color and why there needs to be fundamental changes in the system as well as trying to convince non-political people or people who just don’t vote very often why there needs to be that fundamental change.

This experience also made more aware of the neighborhoods in Boston especially the African-American neighborhoods. Even though I taught public school there for three years, it was still a learning experience. There were countless times at countless events over the past three months where I was the only Asian American person in a pre-dominantly African-American crowd. Driving, walking, meeting, and talking with regular, hard-working people in the neighborhoods of Roxbury, Dorchester, and Mattapan has made me feel more at ease going into these neighborhoods. The problem is despite my teaching experience in African American neighborhoods, I still needed to be deprogrammed of my pre-existing reservations about being in these neighborhoods. The problem stems from the fact that there is such a stigmatization in African-American neighborhoods no matter in which US city you are talking about. It takes a person with an open mind and a willingness to listen to overcome these reservations.

I would never have experienced all these things without Sam and the AAA Fund hiring me three months ago, but in that short time, I have been getting responses from people that I have changed and grown up so much. Indeed, I feel that what they are saying is true because it has been reflected in my writings and responses to articles on my Facebook page. Knowing and listening to the pulse of a community is very important trait to have especially in building the alliances that are needed to bring much needed representation and equity in decision-making positions not only in city government, but government in general.

There are more issues to discuss and more problems to solve in communities of color, but these are the highlights of what I experienced working on Sam’s campaign. However, my journey working for Sam Yoon is not over yet and I hope that I can continue to share this journey with all of you.
