ASIAN AMERICAN ACTION FUND OF GREATER CHICAGO ANNOUNCES ITS ENDORSED SLATE FOR CHICAGO ELECTIONS 2011

ASIAN AMERICAN ACTION FUND OF GREATER CHICAGO ANNOUNCES ITS ENDORSED SLATE FOR CHICAGO ELECTIONS 2011

Chicago – The Asian American Action Fund of Greater Chicago (AAAF-GC) is proud to endorse Rahm Emanuel as a candidate for Mayor of the great city of Chicago and announces its endorsed slate of four candidates for Chicago City Council:

Ward 4 Will Burns friendsofwillburns.com
Ward 46 Emily Stewart citizensforstewart.com
Ward 47 Ameya Pawar renewchicago.com
Ward 48 Harry Osterman harryosterman.org

The AAAF-GC represents Asians across ethnicity and life experience. Our parents and grandparents immigrated to this city for the chance to give us a better life. Today more than one in four Chicagoans is an immigrant or the child of an immigrant, and the percentage is even higher among Asian Pacific Americans (APAs). Chicago is a world-class city because immigrants built it from the ground up. The APA community – alongside other immigrant communities – looks forward to working with Mr. Emanuel to embrace the contributions of immigrants. We urge him to join Mayors Bloomberg, Villaraigosa, and other big city mayors and business leaders in the fight for comprehensive immigration reform and immigrant integration. In our next mayor, we need a vocal leader for federal reform and a creative public servant who will commit municipal resources to educating, integrating, and protecting immigrants. We believe that Rahm Emanuel can become that Mayor.

In Chicago, APAs make up nearly five percent of the total population. Although there are several APAs in elective office on the local level in several cities surrounding the Chicago area, there still are no APA elected officials in the City of Chicago or on the State and Federal levels. We will work with Mr. Emanuel to assure that APAs are fairly represented in his administration and in elective office.

As members of the Illinois General Assembly, Will Burns and Harry Osterman have demonstrated a commitment to the issues important the APA community; both are candidates with deep experience and great substance, and we look forward to their carrying this commitment forward in Chicago’s City Council.

AAAF-GC is proud to support two strong APA candidates for Alderman, Ameya Pawar and Emily Stewart. “Bringing a smart, skilled and fresh perspective to city governance and management, Mr. Pawar and Ms. Stewart will well serve as great representatives of their wards and Chicago,” said AAAF-GC Vice President Anita Banerji.

The mission of AAAF-GC is to encourage APA Democrats to participate in the political process and to empower the APA community so that we can address the under-representation of APAs in the political life of the Greater Chicago area. The AAAF-GC also supports non-APA candidates who are supportive on issues of concern to the APA community. The Asian American Action Fund achieves its goals by identifying qualified Democratic candidates, providing them with financial and technical assistance, and building a local network of activists, funders, and supporters. Leslie Byrne for Congress

Ed. Note: While AAA-Fund will not make a pre-primary endorsement in this race, its bloggers are free to opine about any candidate. To foster a spirited dialogue, we encourage readers to post their Comments on our Blog. Rose Chu serves on the AAA-Fund Board.

Leslie Byrne served as Virginia state delegate, state senator and the White House Director of Consumer Affairs under President Clinton. She was the first Congresswoman elected from Virginia. She has a strong progressive record supporting environmental, health care, transportation and consumer legislation. She is not afraid to be a Democrat and to do what’s right. She is also a hero in the Vietnamese American community as a key sponsor of the House-Senate Joint Resolution designating May 11, 1994 as Vietnam Human Right Day.

Leslie Byrne signed a letter along with 75 other former members of Congress asking President Bush not to invade Iraq but to allow time for the UN inspectors to do their jobs, and to strengthen our economic and diplomatic efforts. In March 2008, she signed onto “A Responsible Plan to End the War” addressing the necessity for energy independence, restoring our Constitution, rebuilding and properly supporting our military men and women, humanitarian concerns, rejuvenating U.S. diplomatic power, and most of all, ending U.S. military action in Iraq.

She is running for the open 11th District in Northern Virginia in the Democratic Primary on June 10th. Congressman Tom Davis is not running for re-election and the Republicans are nominating Keith Fimian, a wealthy businessman with no political experience. The Democrats have a great opportunity to win this district, which voted for John Kerry, Governor Tim Kaine and Senator Jim Webb.
